This non-fiction book is hardly
reflective of its title - "U.S. Special Forces". It is in fact
three books in one - and not one of the three sections is on Special Forces. Alan
M. and Frieda W. Landau write a section on Airborne Rangers; Terry
Griswold and D.M. Giangreco write a section about Delta; and Hans
Halberstadt writes a section about the Navy SEALS. The Navy
SEALS and Army Rangers are not Special Forces; and Delta is a special
mission unit belonging to JSOC - or Joint Special Operations Command.
Although Delta is composed of mostly Special Forces Soldiers it also
has a fair proportion of Rangers and members of other services
assigned. There is little mention of any of the seven U.S. Army
Special Forces groups (sometimes referred to as "Green Berets") currently in existence (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th,
10th, 19th, and 20th groups) or past groups that have been deactivated
(6th, 8th, 11th, and 11th groups).
That being said - it is a very
informative book with great photos. Worth having as a reference or to
read once or twice. You just have to get past the fact that the
title is extremely misleading! The books timeline begins in the
early to mid-1970s ends just after Desert Storm. If you want to
know about Delta, SEALS, or Rangers this is an excellent book; but if
you want to know about U.S. Army Special Forces then pass this one up.
